From Sariyah: Whenever someone would enter the apartment of Rabee' bin Khaytham and he had a mus.haf (copy of the Qur'an) there, he would cover it. (al-Siyar of al-Dhahabi 4/260). And from al-A'mash: Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla used to pray and when someone approached to enter, he would sleep on his bed. (al-Siyar 4/264). Ibn Wasi' said: A man may cry (out of piety and fear) for twenty years whilst his wife (residing) alongside him would not even know. (al-Siyar 6/122). Sahl bin Mansoor said: Bishr used to pray and would lengthen his prayer. A man behind him would watch and he (Bishr) noticed him watching. When he finished he said, "Let not what you have seen amaze you, for Iblis worshipped Allaah for a lengthy period of time alongside the Angels." (al-Siyar 8/361). Malik said: I never learned knowledge except for my own self (to benefit and practice) and I never learned knowledge so that the people are in need of me. And likewise were the people (meaning of his time, they acquired knowledge to benefit their own selves). (al-Siyar 8/66).
